Named for the surfing destination Newport OR, this hop is clean and bitter, with flavors of wine and balsamic. Very high Alpha, used almost exclusively for bittering as the aroma is ‘nothing special’ (John Maier, Rogue Headbrewer, Newport OR). Generally overlooked, but common in Pale Ale and American Lagers. Even with the very good bittering qualities Newport has been pretty much unknown or ignored in the brewing world.

Newport is also home to Rogue Brewing who has several recipes utilizing Newport. Some is grown on the Rogue Farm. A child of a Hallertau Magnum and a USDA Male IT Guy, New Port was bred cooperatively by Oregon State University and the USDA to resist both powdery and downy mildew.
