Description

Simcoe® YCR-14 CV is a modern hop from the USA and is one of the TOP TEN varieties used in the American Craft Beer Movement.  It is grown in the United States and is known for DUAL PURPOSE brewing versatility and unique aroma characteristics.  It continues to rise in popularity and is sometimes hard to find in homebrew shops.  If you have enjoyed a brew with that sweet piney aroma like freshly trimmed buds it was probably Simcoe!  This is possibly due to Simcoe having one of the highest known Myrcene oil levels.  Simcoe works best in IPA, PALE ALE, AMBER, and WHEAT beers.  Specific aroma descriptors include passion fruit, citrus, pine, berry and earthy characteristics.  Levels vary between batches and may not be exactly as pictured but will generally be within the ranges stated below. Possible substitutions are Summit® and Magnum.  Alpha Acid 23.5%.

These hops are packaged near the farm by a coop owned by the farmers, YCHHOPS® a company formed from the merger of Yakima Chief and Hop Union.   This is currently one of the “IT” hops for the US Market.   These are professionally packed hops in a nitrogen flushed light and oxygen barrier foil pack and they will remain usable for a long time.

WHERE TO TRY THEM:   Simcoe is noticeably present in Dogfish Head’s 60 and 90 Minute IPAs. New Belgium’s Ranger uses it alongside Cascade and Chinook, and Pennsylvania’s Weyerbacher Brewing Company makes a fabulous IPA called Double Simcoe.

YCH HOPS is a grower-owned global hop supplier focused on providing the highest quality hops and brewing solutions to brewers of all sizes.  Powder and pellets are produced from whole leaf hops using YCH HOPS’ proprietary cryogenic separation process that preserves all components of each fraction. LupuLN2 is purified lupulin powder containing most of the resin compounds and aromatic oils derived directly from whole hop flowers. It is ideal for use in the whirlpool or fermenter for imparting intense hop flavor and aroma with minimal vegetal flavor and improved yield. Used in combination with Resinate® CO2 extract, LupuLN2 can add hop aroma and flavor to the end of boil or in dry hopping for a twofold approach to achieving superior brewery efficiency without sacrificing flavor. Depending on how much pellet or whole leaf is replaced by either of these products, breweries may see significant improvements in beer yield which contribute to both the bottom line and sustainability mission of YCH and many of our customers.

APPLICATION AND USAGE:  LupuLN2 may be used anywhere pellet hops can be used and are best used for late kettle and dry hop additions. As a starting point for recipe formulation or modification dose rate is estimated at 50% of pellets by weight. It is best used in beers defined by their hop flavor and aroma with hop loads of at least 1 lb/bbl in late kettle or dry hop additions where a larger yield increase will occur from substituting out pellets or whole leaf.
