This kit will get you a shorter lag time, reduce the chances of a stuck fermentation, and reduce the possibility of fruity ‘off’ flavors due to stressed yeasties. All commercial brewerys have some way aerate their worts. Aeration is the most effective approach to this problem.
The air pump is a standard aquarium pump – and all the parts are replaceable right here on eBay. We also sell an economy kit that comes without the air pump – you can pick one up locally and save on shipping. Since the air is still free in most places, this kit is much less expensive to operate than the pure oxygen regulator types.
This air type kit is also safer than an oxygen type kit – Pure Oxygen is highly flammable!
Critique: An important note is that you must not get the air filter wet. The kit works well but we found two minor problems: First is in the stock photo the drilled bung shown is not included in the kit. Most likely they were thinking that any of you advanced enough to need this kit would already have a drilled bung to fit your carboys. Second is that the barbs on the filter are very large compared to the size of the tubing included. On a few but not all of the kits we found the tubing was not pre-stretched and we had to do this:
